Moapa Band of Paiutes to host $300M cement plant

The Moapa Band of Paiutes signed a deal to host a $300 million cement plant on a remote part of the tribe's reservation near Las Vegas.

The tribe hopes the deal with Ash Grove Cement Co. will generate jobs and much-needed revenue. "What we need is industry," Chairman Phil Swain tells The Wall Street Journal.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs has held two public hearings on the plant. It will be Ash Grove's first new facility in almost 80 years.

Demand for cement is at all-time high in the U.S. But environmental opposition has halted cement plants throughout the country.
