Native remake of 'Romeo and Juliet' draws praise

A Native American remake of a Shakespeare classic drew positive reviews when it was recently staged in Los Angeles.

"Kino and Teresa" was written by James Lujan, a member of Taos Pueblo in New Mexico. It tells the story of a Pueblo man and a Spanish woman who fall in love amid conflict between their nations in the 17th century.

Lujan debuted the play as part of the Native Voices program at the Autry National Center in Los Angeles. He turned to writing after finding few roles for Native people in the theater industry.
