The Indian Claims Commission of Canada issued rulings and recommendations on Friday in favor of three First Nation land claims in Saskatchewan. Meanwhile, a First Nation in Ontario signed a land claim settlement on Friday.
The ICC ruled that the Canadian government wrongly deprived the Cumberland House Cree Nation and the James Smith Cree Nation of nearly 60,000 acres of land.
The ICC also ruled that the Chakastaypasin Band was deprived of a 15,500-acre reserve.
The government was urged to negotiate and settle the land claims in favor of the First Nations. The ICC made recommendations on four separate issues related to the three bands.
In related news, the Rainy River First Nations in Ontario signed a $71 million land claim settlement with the government. The band will receive about 19,000 hectares, or nearly 47,000 acres, of land.
