Sacred site now a sanctuary in downtown St. Paul

The city of St. Paul will hold a dedication ceremony on Saturday for the Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary, a 27-acre site long held sacred by the Dakota Sioux.

The sanctuary is home to Wakan Tipi, the emergency cave of the Dakota people. But due to vandalism and neglect, the cave has been closed. The rock drawings inside have all but disappeared.

The sanctuary is named for the late U.S. Rep. Bruce Vento.
