Two factions of the San Pasqual Band Of Mission Indians are disputing the result of a recall election on Sunday in which three top leaders were ousted.
One faction claims they recalled Chairman Allen Lawson Secretary-Treasurer Angela Martinez-McNeal and Councilman Dave Toler. The leaders are accused of trying to block the addition of 212 to the tribal rolls.
But another faction claims the recall is invalid. The Bureau of Indian Affairs is reviewing the election to determine who are the legitimate leaders.
The addition of the 212 people would nearly double the size of the tribe, whose membership is currently about 300.
