Oglala vice president to speak at hemp gathering

Alex White Plume, the vice president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, will speak at the fifth annual Black Hills Hemp Hoe Down on Friday.

Citing the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 and tribal law, White Plume and his family have tried to grow hemp on the Pine Ridge Reservation. But federal agents have raided his farm repeatedly, destroying thousands of plants and taking his crops.

According to The Rapid City Journal, White Plume is under a court injunction not to grow any new crops but the decision is being appealed. The federal government says hemp is no different from marijuana, an illicit drug.
