Eastern Cherokee Band starts gardening program

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians has started a gardening program to preserve the North Carolina tribe's agricultural heritage.

Gardening has long been a way of live for the tribal families. But the practice is fading out among younger generations.

The Cherokee Family Gardens program, now its in its second year, hopes to change that by providing free kits with tools and seeds to tribal members. About 450 kits, good for a 20-by-25-foot garden, were distributed this spring.
