Two Bureau of Indian Affairs employees saved four girls from a fire at a dorm on the Crow Creek Sioux Reservation in South Dakota.
The fire broke out Sunday afternoon at the Crow Creek High School. More than 30 students and staff members were trapped inside the student dorm as flames engulfed the 43-year-old building.
Most of the students and staff escaped the blaze but four girls were unable to make it out. So an unnamed employee crawled back inside the dorm on her hands and knees to lead two of the girls to safety.
Two girls remained trapped on the third floor of the dorm but the firefighters' ladder couldn't reach them. So employee Jeff Swanson climbed to the top of the ladder and caught the girls in his arms as they jumped out of a window.
Seven students were taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation. Tribal officials say it was a miracle that no one was killed or seriously injured.
