Oregon college to receive tribal blessing for name

A community college in Oregon will finally receive blessings from local tribes to use an Indian word as its name.

Chemeketa Community College was named in 1969 but no one ever asked if tribes approved. As the school's 35th anniversary approached, officials finally sought the support of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians.

The tribes agreed and they will participate in a naming ceremony next Wednesday. The entire week will be dedicated to celebrating Native Americans.

The word Chemeketa comes from the historic Kalapuya Tribe, whose descendants live among the Grand Ronde. The exact meaning is not known.
