The chairman of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa has been told he cannot seek re-election because he has lived off the tribe's reservation in Wisconsin.
Ray DePerry, who recently delivered the first State of the Tribes address to the Wisconsin Legislature, said he had proof of his reservation residency. But five council members voted not to certify him for the upcoming primary.
In another action, the same five council members voted to fire the tribe's financial adviser after he told them no banks were interested in financing a $30 million casino. The project will have to be scaled down, said DePerry.
