Soboba woman leads effort to preserve tribe's culture

Charlene Ryan, a member of the Soboba Band of Luiseo Indians, is leading an effort to preserve her tribe's history and culture.

Ryan is the tribe's cultural program director. She started the Cham-Mix Poki, which means "House of our Culture" in the Luiseo language, to serve as a repository for books, artifacts, manuscripts, maps, photographs and other information about the Soboba Band and other tribes.

She is also focusing on the Luiseo language. She installed a language kiosk at the Soboba Sports Complex to help tribal members get reacquainted with their language.
