World Bank president visits Pine Ridge Reservation

James Wolfensohn, the outgoing president of the World Bank, visited the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota and said he would work to improve economic conditions for indigenous people.

Wolfensohn toured the reservation to learn about entrepreneurial efforts among members of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. He also announced the start of the Global Facilities Fund for Indigenous Peoples, a new loan program.

Wolfensohn is leaving the World Bank on June 1. He will be replaced by deputy defense secretary Paul Wolfowitz, a Bush loyalist.
