Ernest Childers, a Creek Nation veteran who was awarded the Medal of Honor for service in World War II, died March 17 after suffering strokes. He was 87.
Childers grew up on part of his grandfather's allotment in Oklahoma. He attended the Chilocco Indian School and later joined the Oklahoma National Guard, which was activated during WWII.
In the Army, Childers rose to the rank of second lieutenant in the 45th Infantry Division. He received the Medal of Honor for his actions in a 1943 action in Italy.
Childers is one of 24 Native Americans who have received the award.
