Rep. Barbara Cubin (R-Wyoming) introduced a bill to block the National Park Service from recognizing Devils Tower National Monument as a sacred site.
Cubin says the proposal to designate Devils Tower as the "Bear Lodge National Historic Landmark" is really an effort to change to name of the monument. She claims the designation will hurt tourism and the economy.
NPS is offering to add the designation to underscore its importance in tribal culture. Tribes in the Plains use the monument for the Sundance and other ceremonies.
