Fritz Scholder, maverick Native artist, passes on

Fritz Scholder, an influential Luiseo/German artist who challenged notions of Indian art, died last Thursday due to complications from diabetes. He was 67.

Scholder rejected labels for both his art and his heritage. "He broke the mold for Indian style," James McGrath, a former art director at the Institute of American Indian Arts, told The Albuquerque Journal.

Scholder became well known for his unusual paintings of Indian life in the 1960s and 1970s. But he also drew on other subjects, such as the pyramids in Egypt and vampires.
