Ban on new nursing homes affects tribal families

The South Dakota Legislature passed a bill to make the state's ban on new nursing homes permanent.

Indian lawmakers unsuccessfully sought an amendment to carve out an exception for nursing homes built on reservations. They said it is unfair to make Indian families travel far distances to visit elderly relatives.

Tribes can still build their own nursing homes but they won't be able to receive Medicaid funding due to the state's ban.
