The New Mexico Public Education Department held an Indian Education Summit on Monday to discuss ways to improve the education of Indian students and improve tribal-state relations.

The summit was held at Ohkay Owingeh, formerly known as San Juan Pueblo. More than 300 representatives from every tribe in the state attended, The Santa Fe New Mexican reported.

Gov. Bill Richardson (D) delivered the keynote. He announced $500,000 for a study and recommendations on Indian education.

The state is also distributing $2.5 million to 12 tribes for infrastructure improvements.
