Tule River Tribe mourning loss of longtime leader


The Tule River Tribe of California is mourning the loss of Philip Daryl Hunter, a former chairman, vice chairman and current council member who died in a car accident this past Sunday, December 11.

Hunter died when his pickup truck was hit by a freight truck in a dense fog, The Porterville Recorder reported. He was 57.

�He meant so much to us,� chairman Neil Peyron told the paper. �This is a great loss to the community, to our family, as well as a great loss to Indian Country.�

Hunter spent 12 years on the tribal council and was the longest serving member of the council. He served one year as chairman and was active in veterans, health and environmetal issues.
