Police in Winnipeg, Manitoba, won't launch an independent investigation into the shooting death of a Metis man at the hands of police.

Howard Fleury, 34, was shot after he allegedly confronted officers with a knife. The incident occurred at his home, where police had been responded to a domestic violence call.

This is the second shooting of a Metis person in Winnipeg this year. In January, Matthew Dumas, 18, was shot and killed by an officer after a chase.

The Manitoba Mtis Federation said relations with the police have improved since the January shooting. But President David Chartrand said an independent investigation is still needed because officers are involved.
