A trial that could result in the banishment of three member of the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians has been delayed until January.

The Viejas Band's new tribal court was due to start the trial in December but the case will begin January 3 and run into February, The San Diego Union Tribune reports.

Tamara Banegas, 27, Tina Hood, 28, and Michael LaChappa, 27, are accused of taking part in an attack of another tribal member. Larry Sutton, the nephew of the Viejas chairman, is still recovering from the incident.

The trial will be the first of its kind for tribes in San Diego County. It will be the first major test of the Viejas Band's court.
