Chinook Nation challenges Cowlitz claim to site

The Chinook Nation of Washington is disputing another tribe's claim to a burial site known as Mount Coffin.

The Chinooks say the site lies within their territory. But the Cowlitz Tribe says its ancestors are buried there and held a cleansing ceremony over the weekend.

The Cowlitz's claim plays into the tribe's bid to acquire land in the area. The tribe was recently recognized by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and wants to establish an initial reservation.

The Chinook Nation has sought recognition but was denied by the BIA.
