Art Reviews: Native artists showcase glass work

The Seattle Times reviews two new exhibits that showcase the works of Native glass artists.

"Fusing Traditions: Transformations in Glass by Native American Artists" is running at the Burke Museum and features several artists. "Curated by Roslyn Tunis and Carolyn Kastner, with consultation from Tlingit glass artist Preston Singletary, the exhibit taps the confluence of a growing number of Native American artists working in glass and drawing from tradition to create contemporary art," the paper says.

"Preston Singletary: From the Fire Pit of the Canoe People" at the William Traver Gallery features Preston Singletary's works. "Some of the most exciting are 'The Visitor,' a mask adorned with traditional formline design, but tweaked in an asymmetric, dynamic composition, and "Twilight Eagle Wing," a truncated wing shape that curves slightly like a sail," the paper says.

"Other pieces, such as glass boxes carved in the bentwood style and lit from within, and ladles adorned with cast human and animal forms, are feats of architecture that demonstrate Singletary's continued push on the material even as he searches for depth," the review adds.
