Indians in Colombia stage massive protest

About 8,000 Colombian Indians began a weeklong protest against a free trade agreement with the United States, prompting clashes with the police that left at least one Indian dead and at least 15 others wounded.

The protesters in western Colombia say they were marching peacefully until they were provoked by police. A 53-year-old man died after inhaling tear gas and several children were among those wounded.

The protesters say the free trade deal will lead to more unemployment.
