The American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota has launched a program that will monitor court cases involving American Indians.

The Greater Minnesota Racial Justice Project is trying to ensure Indians are treated fairly in the justice system. Statistics show that American Indians are arrested at extremely high rates in several counties. The Indian conviction rate in these counties is also high.

The project has enlisted volunteers in Beltrami County to observe court proceedings. The program will be expanded to Mahnomen, Hubbard, Becker, Cass and Clearwater counties.
