Billy Luther, a Navajo/Hopi/Laguna Pueblo writer and director from New Mexico, is hoping to show his documentary about the Miss Navajo Nation pageant at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival.
Luther, 30, spent the last year filming the contestants for the annual pageant. He got the idea to make the movie from his mother, who won the contest in 1966.
"I realized these ladies had so much experience that I couldn't focus on just one," Luther told The Gallup Independent.
Work on "Miss Navajo" just wrapped. Luther interviewed contestants and former winners about their experiences.
