Court to hear terminated Ute hunting rights case

A father and son who are accused of hunting on the Ute Reservation without a state license will go before the Utah Court of Appeals next week.

Rick Reber, 53, and his son Colton, 16, say they don't need a state license because Rick Reber's parents were members of the terminated Uintah Band of Ute Indians. Rick Reber was born shortly before the Uintahs were terminated.

The state says the Rebers are not legally Indian. A lower court judge ruled that hunting rights -- if any existed -- cannot be passed down from one generation to the next.
