Site of 1975 Menominee takeover put up for sale

The Menominee Nation of Wisconsin says it doesn't have the resources to buy a former novitate that was the site of a tribal takeover in 1975.

Tribal members occupied the 175-acre site for 34 days. They claimed the tribe owned the land and blocked its sale.

The standoff ended with an agreement that would have allowed the tribe to purchase the site for $1 million. That never happened and now the former Alexian Brothers novitiate will go on the auction block this week. The tribe doesn't plan on placing any bids.
