The number of Native American students at UC Berkeley has dropped significantly over the past decade even as more and more Native Americans attend college.
In 1995, there were 207 Native undergraduates at Berkeley. It is down to 123 as of last semester, The Daily Californian reported.
Officials said they are trying to recruit more Native students. But they said the high fees and lack of Native faculty are obstacles.
Nationwide, 84,600 American Indians and Alaska Natives attended college in 2002, according to a recent report from the Department of Education.
