Leaders of Montana tribal colleges will testify today in support of a bill to subsidize the cost of educating non-Indian students.
Federal funding only provides money for Indian students. So tribal colleges have to shoulder much of the cost for educating non-Indians on their own.
HB16 calls for $3,024 in state funding for each non-Indian student. The bill will be heard by the House Education Committee.
Nationally, about 20 percent of tribal college students are non-Indian.
