Gaming tribes have set up a relief fund to aid the victims of the South Asian tsunami that has claimed the lives of more than 140,000 people in 11 countries.
Tribal leaders hope to raise $1 million for tsunami relief efforts. "This is a tragedy on a global scale that requires all of us as human beings to come together for those left behind in rebuilding their lives, communities, economies and cultures, said Ernie Stevens Jr., chairman of the National Indian Gaming Association.
The Indian Nations UNICEF Tsunami Relief Fund was created by the Viejas Band of the Kumeyaay Nation with a matching donation from the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. The Cherokee Nation, the Barona Band of Mission Indians and other tribes already have pledged funds.
