The Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island held its annual August gathering over the weekend, a tradition that dates back hundreds and hundreds of years.

No one knows exactly how long the event has been held but it has been recorded for the past 330 years. It always takes place during the second weekend of August and is also known as the green corn thanksgiving.

Tribal members from across the country return every year to take part in dances, ceremonies and church services. Elders say Christian services were added after the arrival of Europeans.
