Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. signed into a law a bill clarifying the legal use of peyote, a sacrament of the Native American Church.
The new law legalizes peyote for ceremonial uses only. It authorizes Navajo Nation police to confiscate the drug if not used, possessed or transported in accordance with the law.
Tribal leaders hope the law will prevent non-Natives and non-church members from abusing peyote. A co-sponsor of the bill said peyote misuse is at an all-time high.
