The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe held a primary election last week for 11 council seats, including the chairman's position.
Ron His Horse Is Thunder, the president of Sitting Bull Community College, and Dave Archambault Sr. are in the running for chairman. Incumbent Charlie Murphy decided not to seek re-election.
Also up for grabs in the September 28 general election is the vice chairman post.
Incumbent Tom Iron was ousted, leaving Avis Little Eagle, a current council member, to face James T. McLaughlin.
Tribal members will choose among three candidates for secretary and 16 candidates for eight council seats. Only two council incumbents survived the primary.
