The Oneida Nation of New York has language an intensive program aimed at keeping the Oneida language alive.
With the help of gaming revenues, the tribe in 2004 contracted with Berlitz, the language instruction company, to develop a curriculum. Eight students then studied the curriculum for eight months so they could become fluent.
Now the eight students are teaching the language to others. Penny Raymond, one of the newly fluent instructors, hopes her grandchildren will learn Oneida, something she missed out on while growing up.
