Federal Recognition
New Jersey tribe sees support for recognition bid

The Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Indians of New Jersey are seeing support for their bid to gain state and federal recognition.

The tribe was recognized by a state resolution in the 1980s. But a lawmaker has introduced a new bill to clarify that the tribe can market arts and crafts under the Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990.

State Assemblyman Doug Fisher, a Democrat, also wants the tribe to gain federal recognition. He is urging U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo, a Republican, to help the tribe.
