Garbage dump brings community together

Native or white, rich or poor, people in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, are attracted to the city's garbage dump.

Homeless Natives go there to collect deposit cans and bottles, The New York Times reports. Middle- and upper-class residents find furniture, electronic equipment and scores of other items.

"This is the Ikea of garbage dumps," one rummager says.

An estimated 750 people go to the dump every week. The city has started to impose fees on the dumping of some items and is considering additional fees.
