The Women Empowering Women for Indian Nations (WEWIN) its holding its first annual conference in Minnesota this week.
Co-founded by Sue Masten, the former chairwoman of the Yurok Tribe of California and the former president of the National Congress of American Indians, WEWIN seeks to help Native women succeed in their professional and personal lives.
Other co-founders include Wilma Mankiller, the first woman principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, and Cecilia Fire Thunder, the first woman president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe.
The conference takes place July 14-16 at the Mystic Lake Casino and Hotel, owned by the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community. Next year's conference also takes place at Mystic Lake, outside of Minneapolis.
