Funding for Haliwa-Saponi Tribe's school revoked
Wednesday, July 13, 2005

Commissioners in Warren County, North Carolina, voted 4-0 on Tuesday to revoke a $50,000 appropriation to the Haliwa-Saponi Tribe.

The county had originally approved the appropriation so the tribe could spend it on the Haliwa-Saponi Tribal School, a public charter school. But the local school board sued, putting a hold on the money.

The lawsuit brought an angry speech from commissioner Luke Lucas, The Henderson Daily Dispatch. He criticized the school board for failing to work with county leaders, not being accountable to voters and producing poor educational results, the paper said.
