A Massachusetts man has filed a $10 million lawsuit in hopes of resolving the status of the Watuppa Reservation.
Albert H. Corliss, a member of the Pocasset Wampanoag Tribe, filed the suit against the city of Fall River. He wants damages for alleged violations of his civil rights and his right to enjoy the reservation.
The status of the reservation has been in question for several decades. It was established by the state but the city took over most of it in 1907. An Indian family was also apparently allotted a section of land there.
Corliss claims the reservation was created for the benefit of all Massachusetts Indians.
