Researchers from the Memorial University in Newfoundland have completed a two-year assessment into the educational system for the Innu Nation.
According to CBC News, the report found that only a third of Innu children make it to high school and only 17 of them have graduated from high school in more than a decade. Alcohol abuse is preventing youth from getting and education, the researchers said.
In order to change the situation, the report makes several recommendations. The education system should be managed and staffed by Innu people, should incorporate Innu culture and language and should include alcohol prevention programs, the researchers said.
