Educator Jerry Staples, a member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe, died of cancer at his home in Minnesota on June. He was 57.
Staples served as director of the Indian Education Program for the Anoka-Hennepin School District. He worked for the district for more than 20 years.
In the late 1990s, he left the district to work for the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe. He ran the tribe's adult education department.
Staples also recently wrote two books after leaving Mille Lacs. He put out an Ojibwe language book.
