Wisconsin court upholds award to Mole Lake Band

The Wisconsin Court of Appeals on Tuesday upheld a $370,796 jury award to the Sokaogon (Mole Lake) Band of Lake Superior Chippewa for negligence and breach of contract by the tribe's former accounting firm.

The tribe sued the Schenck accounting firm, alleging that it failed to stop the embezzlement of casino funds. A jury concluded that the accountants overlooked fraud for which a former tribal official was indicted.

The tribe had been awarded $1.4 million but this amount was reduced by a judge to the $370,000 figure. The appeals court refused to reinstate the higher figure.
