The Native student who was denied a diploma for wearing a bolo tie to his graduation ceremony has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the Comcast cable company.
Thomas Benya, 17, was one of 144 students in Maryland to win the Student Achievement Award. He plans to attend the College of Southern Maryland in the fall.
Benya and his family, who are of Cherokee descent, have demanded an apology from Maurice J. McDonough High School and the Charles County Public Schools for the bolo tie flap.
