Lawsuit filed over San Pasqual enrollment dispute

A member of the San Pasqual Band of Mission Indians filed a lawsuit against the Bureau of Indian Affairs on May 31, calling on the agency to take a more active role in the tribe's enrollment dispute.

Eleanor Atilano says the tribe's enrollment committee is trying to "hijack" the tribe by adding more than 200 people to the rolls, The San Diego Union Tribune reported. She wants a federal judge to force the BIA to get more involved.

"The identity of the tribe will be forever altered and lost unless the court intervenes in this controversy," her complaint states, according to the paper.

The BIA has not recognized the addition of the new members, saying they were approved at an invalid meeting.
