David Pego, Chippewa journalist, dies at 51


David Pego, a member of the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe of Michigan who was active in promoting Native journalism, died last week. He was 51.

Pego passed away at his home in South Dakota, where he was a Knight Foundation visiting journalist in residence at South Dakota State University. He organized the Native American Journalists Association there.

Pego spent most of his career in Texas, where he worked for the Austin American-Statesman. He was the first Native journalist to be named a McCormick Tribune Fellow. He served as a delegate to the White House Conference on Indian Education in 1992 and was a journalism instructor at the University of Texas and the University of Oklahoma.
