Museum opens exhibit on Cherokee women

An exhibit on Cherokee women opened at the Museum Center at Five Points in southeast Tennessee.

"Cherokee Women in Legend and Daily Life" runs through August 31. It describes the role that Cherokee women have played throughout tribal history. The exhibit includes a section on the Trail of Tears.

Private collector R. Michael Abram, a co-curator, said Cherokee women had a much more prominent role in tribal society than their counterparts in U.S. society. He said Cherokee women were always consulted on significant decisions and had a right to vote in council meetings.
