Native man found guilty of 13-year-old murder

A Canadian Native man was found guilty on Wednesday in a 13-year-old murder case that attracted international attention.

Clifford Sleigh was convicted of first-degree murder, aggravated sexual assault and kidnapping in the 1992 death of Corrine Gustavson. Corrine, who went by the nickname of "Spunky," was 6 years old at the time.

Sleigh's lawyers attempted to make race an issue at trial because a friend of Corrine's who witnessed the kidnapping said a "Native man" did it. Sleigh later admitted to kidnapping and assaulting Corrine and tried to plead guilty to a lesser crime for her death. DNA evidence helped seal the case against him.
