HHS holds tribal consultation session in California

The Department of Health and Human Services is holding its third annual consultation with tribes in California, Arizona and Nevada.

Acting assistant secretary Dr. Cristina Beato said she heard complaints from tribal leaders about problems related to undocumented immigrants. She said tribes are worried that federal dollars are being diverted from health care for Native Americans.

Beyond immigration, tribes talked about diabetes, substance abuse, obesity, heart disease and other health issues affecting Indian Country.

The meeting continues today on the Rincon Reservation in California.
