A 60-year-old Hopi woman and her family finally have a new home thanks to the efforts of a nonprofit group that has brought affordable housing to reservations across the country.
Mary Tenakhongva hasn't had a place of her own since the 1980s, when her sister's house burned down. Most recently, she was living with her daughter and grandson in a home that didn't have water or electricity.
Thanks to the Red Feather Development Group, she now has a new home made of straw. She obtained a loan to help build the 1,000-square-foot structure, which cost about $55,000.
