Marquette University won't revive 'Warriors' name

The chairman of the Forest County Potawatomi Tribe of Wisconsin praised a decision by Marquette University not to revive its old "Warriors" nickname.

Chairman Harold Frank objected to a proposal to bring back the name. He recalled in an Associated Press story that the school's old Willie Wampum mascot was "a little Indian fellow prancing around with a spear looking like he was delirious.''

The school instead went with "Gold" as its new name, a choice that was welcomed by Darren J. Thompson, a member of the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewas and a junior in political science and criminology. "I'm ecstatic and I'm appreciative that Marquette lived up to their ideals," Thompson told The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Other students were less excited.
